The skin is pierced several times side by side in two symmetrical rows down the back to give the impression of a laced-up corset. Corset piercings are intended to be temporary (that style of piercing doesn’t lend itself to healing very well). Even though piercing has a long history, corset piercings are a relatively new development; the first examples appearing in the late 1990s.
